Nkopodi Mphahlele Inc Attorneys

About Us

Our History

Built on principle. Grown through service.

Nkopodi Mphahlele Inc. Attorneys was founded in 2017 by Mr Nkopodi Patrick Mphahlele, a Pretoria based attorney who set out to build a firm that combined the technical excellence of a major commercial practice with the care, accessibility and integrity that ordinary South Africans so often find lacking in the legal profession. From a single office in Pretoria Central, the firm opened its doors with a clear conviction: that quality legal representation should never be the preserve of the few.

In the years since, that founding conviction has shaped every chapter of our growth. We have widened our reach into the disciplines that matter most to South African individuals, businesses, and public bodies — from criminal defence and labour law to commercial transactions, family matters, conveyancing, and constitutional litigation. Our attorneys have appeared in matters before the Magistrates’ Courts, the High Court, the Labour Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal, and the Constitutional Court, and have advised clients ranging from individuals seeking redress against the State to established companies navigating complex commercial transactions.

Today, Nkopodi Mphahlele Inc. is recognised as a full-service practice that has retained the values it was founded on. We remain a firm where the principal is hands-on, where the attorneys know each client by name, and where every brief — whether modest or multi-million rand — receives the same careful, principled attention. Our story is still being written, and at the heart of every chapter is the same simple commitment: to do excellent legal work, with integrity, for the people who trust us with their matters.

Our Vision

A South Africa in which the law works for everyone who turns to it.
To be the legal partner of choice for individuals, businesses, and institutions who refuse to compromise on integrity — a firm renowned not only for the quality of our legal work, but for the courage, fairness, and humanity with which we do it. We aspire to a South Africa where the rule of law is felt in every community, where every client — regardless of background, means, or circumstance — walks into a law firm and walks out feeling heard, informed, and effectively represented. That is the country we want to help build, one matter at a time.

Our Mission

Excellent legal work. Plainly explained. Honestly delivered.

Our mission is to deliver legal services of the highest professional standard, in a manner that is accessible, ethical, and unwaveringly client-focused. We commit ourselves, in every brief we accept, to:

  • Listening carefully — so that we understand not just the legal question, but the person, the business, or the institution behind it.
  • Advising plainly — in language clients can act on, with the risks, options, and likely outcomes set out clearly.
  • Acting decisively — with the urgency that legal matters demand, and the strategic discipline they reward.
  • Upholding integrity — by doing the right thing when no one is watching, and the courageous thing when everyone is.
  • Pursuing results — measured not by hours billed, but by outcomes that genuinely serve our clients’ interests.

Above all, our mission is to be a firm that our clients trust, that our colleagues respect, and that our country can rely on — in the boardroom, in the courtroom, and in the everyday lives of the people we serve.

Meet Our Team

Skilled attorneys. Steady hands. People you can speak to.
A law firm is, in the end, only as strong as the people who make it up. At Nkopodi Mphahlele Inc., our attorneys, candidate attorneys, and support staff share more than just a workplace — they share a standard. Every member of our team is committed to disciplined legal work, honest client communication, and the kind of careful preparation that turns good arguments into great outcomes. We deliberately keep our practice close-knit. That means when you instruct us, you deal with attorneys who know your matter personally — not a rotating cast of names you have never met. Whether your matter falls into one of our specialist disciplines or sits across several, you will be guided by an attorney who is properly briefed, properly available, and properly accountable to you. Mr Nkopodi Patrick Mphahlele

Founder & Chairman – LLB (NWU)

Nkopodi Patrick Mphahlele is the founder and chairman of Nkopodi Mphahlele Inc. Attorneys, the practice he established with a clear conviction — that quality legal representation should never be the preserve of the few. He has spent his career building a firm that pairs technical excellence with genuine, principled client service, and continues to set the standard, ethical compass, and long-term direction of the practice in his role as chairman.

Admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 2017, Mr Mphahlele has appeared in matters before the Magistrates’ Courts, the High Court, the Labour Court, and the Supreme Court of Appeal, and has advised clients ranging from individuals seeking redress against the State to established companies navigating complex commercial transactions. As chairman, he now focuses on the governance, strategic direction, and stewardship of the firm — guiding the executive on matters of principle, risk, and long-term growth, while leaving the day-to-day running of the practice to the firm’s chief executive and senior attorneys.

Beyond the practice, his commitment to access and upliftment is personal. Each year, Mr Mphahlele takes on at least one pro bono matter for a client who could not otherwise afford private representation. He also gives back to the rural primary school he himself attended — supplying learners with school uniforms, shoes, and, where the need arises, basic stationery — a quiet, sustained investment in the next generation of children from his home community.

Edgar is the chief executive officer of Nkopodi Mphahlele Inc. Attorneys and the principal under whom the firm’s day-to-day legal practice is run. He combines a strong legal grounding with a hands-on, business-minded approach to leadership — the kind of senior practitioner who is as comfortable steering the strategy of a growing law firm as he is in court for a client. Reporting to the chairman, he leads the executive of the firm and is accountable for the quality, efficiency, and culture of every legal team operating under the Nkopodi Mphahlele Inc. roof.

In practice, Edgar’s signature focus areas are commercial law, labour law, and appellate work, with a particular interest in personal liability and Road Accident Fund matters where careful pleading and strong courtroom advocacy make the decisive difference. As CEO, he also exercises broader oversight across the firm’s full range of practice areas — from family and property law to medical, public, and criminal law — ensuring that every matter, regardless of size or speciality, is handled to the same standard of care, technical rigour, and client communication. Colleagues and clients alike know him as a steady, decisive leader who reads the brief, asks the harder question, and treats every client — corporate or individual — with the same seriousness.
